Preparatory Workshop for the Water Awareness-Raising Program

Information Visit to Germany

Within the joint cooperation of the Hanns Seidel and the State Information Service, a visit for a small selected group of the Nile Centers' staff was organized to upgrade their skills to adopt new concepts and tools for a more effective role in their governorates. The training program was titled "Environmental Awareness through Public Participation". The program included field visits to environmental awareness institutions (water school & ecological center) where the participants got first hand information on the German experience in dealing with these issues.

World Environment Day

Within its objective to raise environmental awareness, Hanns Seidel Foundation contributed to the celebration of the Word Environment Day 2010 by supporting Wadi Environmental Science Centre who hosted the World Environment Day together with The Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs on 5th of June, 2010 in Al-Azhar Park, Cairo. The WED was inaugurated by HE Minister Maged George, State Minister for Environmental Affairs and was celebrated by organizing an environmental science fair open to the entire community. This exciting event attracted people from all over Egypt offering a place to learn - in a fun and interesting way about our environment. Guests had an opportunity to see cutting-edge energy and building technology, and participate in a variety of activities, games, art exhibits, and contests. It provided an avenue for groups and companies to diffuse environmental information to the public, allow diverse organizations to network, and demonstrate the world's hope for a sustainable environment in a fun and educational way.

New and Renewable Energy Workshop

Within the efforts of the Hanns Seidel Foundation to protect the environment, it organized a workshop in cooperation with its partner, the State Information Service, on New and Renewable Energy in which knowledge and experience in this field was exchanged. The workshop that took place in Hurghada Nile Center from 25-27 May 2010, was attended by representatives from regional universities, New and Renewable Energy Authority and NGOs from participating governorates. Dr. Smair El-Shimy, the Biogas Expert, suggested to make the feasibility study to those who are interested to build Biogas units, in an attempt to further support the implementation of renewable energy sources.

Visit of the Chairman of the State Information Service to HSS Headquarters

Ambassador Ismail Khairat, Chairman of the State Information Service in Egypt visited Germany in the period of 09-14.05.2010 to have talks with the Chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation as well as other high ranking representatives about the current and future cooperation between both institutions, which have cooperated over 30 years in many consecutive projects aiming at supporting Egypt's democratic reform process and sustainable development strategies. This visit comes within efforts of both partners to boost the German-Egyptian collaboration in the field of development cooperation, to ensure the achievement of their joint objectives and to review visions for future cooperation.

Launching Conference of the Win-Win Initiative: Where Human and Environmental Interests Meet

On 28 and 29 April the Hanns Seidel Foundation launched the Win-Win Initiative during its conference with the title "Exploring Win-Win Strategies for Sustainable Local Development: A MENA Initiave on Poverty-Environment Mainstreaming" that took place in the American University in Cairo in the Fifth Settlement. This initiative aims to convert the mainstreaming of poverty-environment in development cooperation into concrete gains on the ground. This is sought by creating an interactive and dynamic network of innovative local practitioners and researchers in search for practical ways to improve people's lives and safeguard the environment in the same in the MENA region. The new online forum (winwininitiative.net) presents a medium and an opportunity for contact and know-how exchange on this issue. The second day included various parrallel sessions, in which a number of reality-tested win-win strategies for sustainable local development in the MENA region were presented. On the 30th of April the participants chose among 2 field visits: either Desert Development Center or A.P.E. and SOY (the recycling school) in Mokattam.

Launching an Awareness Campaign on Landmines Risks

A Closing Ceremony for the "National Campaign for Awareness-raising Against Landmines" was organized at Matrouh Nile Center. The Ceremony was attended by prominent figures of the Matrouh community, the General Secretary of Matrouh Governorate, Chairman and members of the "Landmines Survivors NGO" as well as heads of concerned departments. The school students, who won in the competitions organized during the campaign held in several cities from El-Alamein east to Sidi Barani west of Marsa Matrouh city, were honored during the ceremony. Representatives of the main partners organizing the campaign were present; the Hanns Seidel Foundation, the State Information Service, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency and Matrouh Education Department. Parallel to the closing ceremony, the Hanns Seidel Foundation organized together with the Marsa Matrouh Nile Center a workshop with the title "Role of the Civil Society in Facing the Problem of the Landmines" aiming to mobilize the civic society to organize further awareness-raising activities for the local community.

Public Participation in Sustainable Development

In order to enhance public participation in the sustainable development process, the Foundation organized a workshop that took place in the Alexandria Nile Center in the period from 15-17 March 2010 with the aim to familiarize the public with this concept and to promote civic's society's role.

Opening of Awareness Campaign on Landmines Risks

Within Hanns Seidel Foundation's support of public participation efforts, and in response to an initiative started by the Nile Center in Marsa Matruh and the "Landmines Survivors NGO", an awareness raising campaign for school children in Matrouh Governorate is organized in the period 6/3 - 15/4/2010. It is held in close cooperation with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) and is coordinated through the Nile Center with the Educational Department in Matrouh and the Executive Secretariat for Demining and Development of the North West Coast. The campaign mainly targets primary and preparatory school chidren in Marsa Matrouh, EL-Kasr, Sidi Barani, El-Alamein, Sidi Abdel-Rahman, El-Dabaa and Ras El-Hekma cities of Matrouh Governorate.

Environmental Protection Workshop

Within the Capacity Building Program of the Hanns Seidel Foundation, a workshop on Environmental Protection was held in Port Said Nile Center in the period from 21-23 February 2010. The workshop was attended by representatives of HSS, ten Nile Centers' from the Suez Canal Region and Upper Egypt, NGOs from the same regions, as well as university professors. A field visit was also made to a Petrochemical Factory to be familiarized with the environmental procedures applied in this industry.

Madinat Habu Urban Development Plan: A Participatory Approach

This workshop was to support the urban development initiative of Madinat Habu, Luxor and defined participatory methods to be applied in the next phase of this initiative. The workshop discussed the urban development plan for Luxor, with Kom Lolah Village at Madinat Habu as the focus for implementing a participatory urban development approach. An action plan for the next phase was elaborated during the workshop.

This workshop was to support know-how exchange and cooperation with Egyptian urban planning experts about participatory urban development practices. The workshop tackled concepts, methods and practices of public participation in urban development. Examples from Europe and Egypt were presented and discussed.

Directors of Nile Centers from all over the country met together with the Chairman of the State Information Service and the Representative of HSS to present and evaluate work results of the year 2009 and to define main work issues and work plan for the year 2010

Environmental Awareness Workshop

In order to raise environmental awareness of children and youth on the value of protected areas, the Foundation organized a workshop in cooperation with "Nature Conservation Egypt" NGO and the Qarun Lake Protected Area Office in Fayoum on 11 November 2009.

Public Meeting in Habu

In cooperation with "The Supreme Council of Luxor City" the Foundation supported the initiation of a participatory urban development plan implementing for Kom Lolah Village, adjacent to Habu Temple in Luxor. In this framework, a public meeting is held in Habu on 21.10.2009.


Public Participation Training

Within the training program organized for the Nile Centers' staff, two training courses were held on 10-12.10.2009 and on 13-15.10.2009 to practice modern tools of workshop moderation with the German expert, Mr. Manfred Oepen.
